Gates & Garden

Steve Morris Designs makes stunning and imaginative gates (driveway gates, entrance gates, garden gates), fences, outdoor furniture, and sculpture. Organic metal trees, giant butterflies, and hummingbirds. Clean and modern minimal shapes. Ornamental and ornate detail. Whatever the style, all work for the outdoors is designed to complement, enhance, and frame its environment – not overpower it.

Materials

Gates, fences, outdoor furniture, and sculpture can be made from stainless steel, cold-rolled steel, powder-coated (painted) steel, bronze, brass, copper, or aluminum. As with Steve’s railings and staircases, wood, glass, resin, and stone can be incorporated into many designs.

Finishes

To protect from rust, metalwork for the outdoors can be clear-coated, or painted (powder-coated), or stainless steel may be used. Different colors can be achieved with patinaes, or some pieces may be left to weather naturally for a more organic effect.

Design

All gates, fences, outdoor furniture, and sculpture is custom-designed for each client. Steve Morris Designs is based in Upstate New York, where nature is everywhere, gardens and outdoor environments are a prominent feature of many homes, and exposure to many types of weather is a reality. All of these factors find their way into Steve’s designs for the outdoors, even though he often designs for more urban environs in nearby New York City. His approach for designing outdoor features is much the same as designing for the indoors: Steve will visit the site, take measurements, survey the surroundings, and begin the process of deciding what style and materials will work best. Drawings soon follow, and are reviewed in detail with the client.

How we work

Like building railings and staircases, most work is completed in our Hudson Valley studio, then delivered and installed. The same sensitivity that guides the installation process indoors, also applies outdoors. While there aren’t quite as many things that can break, or floors that can scratch, a garden and yard is still susceptible to damage, and every effort is made to ensure that the installation is executed as gently as possible, with an awareness of the many things that may be growing nearby.
