Railings & Staircases
Railings and staircases are primarily built offsite, in our Hudson Valley studio. We will deliver and install your railings and/or staircase in the most conscientious way possible. Because we are accustomed to working in beautiful, and often, very high-end homes, all floors are meticulously covered and protected, any spot-welding that occurs is done without sparks and without danger of fire. Mess is kept to a minimum, and every effort is made to keep the installation process as brief and painless as possible.
Materials
Railings can be constructed from a variety of materials – cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, powder-coated steel, and brass, and can incorporate many other different materials to achieve a multitude of looks. Cable-rail, steel rods, wood spindles and handrails, glass panels, resin panels, or laser-cut sheet metal.
Stair treads can be made from the commonly used wood or even the industrial diamond-plate steel, to more exotic materials like glass, thick resin, and stone, and sometimes incorporate lighting features.
Finishes
The finishes for metal railings and staircases somewhat depend on their application – indoor or outdoor, high-traffic or low-use. Commonly used finishes are sand-blasted stainless steel, satin-finish stainless steel, clear-coated cold-rolled steel, and powder-coated steel.
Design
Most railings and staircases are custom-designed by Steve Morris, though some are collaborations with architects and designers. Steve does more than create a beautiful railing or staircase, he designs his work to be safe, sturdy, and long-lasting. He is familiar with New York State building codes, and can make sure that your railings and staircase will meet code, where required. Steve will meet with clients on-site to get a feel for the space, take measurements, and begin the process of deciding on materials and style that would most suit the project. Once a design direction has been established, Steve will provide drawings, and an estimate that is reviewed together with the client.
