Sculpture
Steve has been commissioned to create many beautiful sculptures, mostly for the outdoors, and mostly flora and fauna. There’s been giant bronze birds, that were affixed to a client’s rooftop. Life-like metal trees, that served as posts for garden gates and service gates. A 30-foot stainless steel tree for an estate’s wooded garden path. An enormous bronze spider, sitting on an intricate web, were created to screen the underside of a deck. Another spider was commissioned for a chandelier, with a handblown glass belly. An 11-foot stainless steel metal tree with a giant, illuminated, handblown glass egg, currently stands in the Steve Morris Designs showroom. A gate with a pair of bronze hummingbirds meeting in an arch overhead, is currently in progress in the studio.
Materials
Steve’s sculptures are made from stainless steel, cold-rolled steel, copper, brass, bronze, or aluminum, plus wood, glass, or any other material that the project calls for.
Finishes
With clear-coating, powder-coating (paint), high-polish, sandblasting, or patinaes, there are a number of different looks that can be achieved for the most modern or organic effect.
Design
You may have something specific in mind, or you may simply have a space that “needs something”, and you’re looking for ideas. Steve is equally at ease with both scenarios, and enjoys the process of imagining and collaborating with his clients to create sculptures that enhance their surroundings, and inspire wonder and delight. Steve will do a site visit, to assess a scale for the sculpture that would work best, and also to help evaluate the best placement for the piece. A site visit also helps the design process, and can help spark ideas for both the client and designer. Once a concept, materials, scale, and placement have been agreed upon, detailed drawings are prepared for review.
How we work
There are many factors that go into pricing for sculpture, in terms of materials, scale, and intricacy of design. When a design has been agreed upon, Steve will present an estimate, with as many details of the project as possible. This will be reviewed together, and if adjustments need to be made to accomodate budget, those are discussed and amendments are made where necessary. There also may be site preparations that need to be made prior to installation, and those will be discussed, including who will be making those preparations. Sculpture will be constructed in our Hudson Valley studio, where the client is welcome to visit to view the work in progress. When the sculpture is complete, Steve will deliver and install the piece on site.
